Heart Warming True Story from the Church Tech Booth - Robbie
When we first started projecting the lyrics onto screens at our church, we had a tough time finding new volunteers (sound familiar?). One Sunday, Michael, the lead volunteer in the tech booth told me "Hey I found you a new techie!" I was thrilled! I said "Great! Where are they?!" Michael said, "Right there - can't you see him - he's in the tech booth." I looked but I couldn't see anyone. I walked closer and saw a very young-looking boy sitting in the seat. Robbie was so small you could not see him behind the small monitors on the tech desk.
My first thought was - oh Michael what have you done! Robbie was going into seventh grade. Everyone in the tech booth was an adult - could he really focus enough to keep the church screens going during the worship service?
Robbie was a quick learner, focused and very good with computers. His happy go lucky spirit made him a favorite in the tech booth. Robby literally ran circles around us on the computer. He was so creative - we all adored Robbie and appreciated his enthusiasm and skills.
Robbie volunteered every Sunday to Tech the contemporary service. He was always happy to be there and showed up on time. Robbie was the first of our teen techies - soon all the techies were teens except for me :-). Suddenly the tech booth became the cool place to be on Sunday morning. I enjoyed building a teen ministry tech team and it was a very special time for all of us in the Tech booth.
As Rob grew, so did his ministry at our church. After he graduated from high school, he continued volunteering in the tech booth but became a paid staff youth leader for the Middle School kids and then the High School students. Eventually, Rob took a full-time call as the Director of Middle School Ministries in a neighboring church and later at a Christian Mountain Camp.
You never know where or how a seed planted will flourish later in someone's life. Giving an unexpected person a chance will unfold in better ways than you can imagine.
God bless,
